Error Code: 0×80070005
Cause:
The primary cause of this error is problem in the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation software installed on your computer.
Symptoms:
On running Windows Update, you get an error message that says:
“Windows could not search for new updates Error(s) found: 0x8007005“
Solution:
- Download the Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool.
- Run the file and click ‘Continue’.
- Reboot your computer after the installation completes.
Error Code: 0×80070002
Cause:
A slow internet connection, connection timeout which just requires you to try again after some time, or data mismatch in the DataStore folder are some of the common causes of 0×80070002 error.

Solution:
- Open up the Start menu and select Run.
- In the Open box type services.msc and press Enter.
- In the Services management console window that opens, right click Automatic Update or Windows Update service and click Stop.
- Open up the Start menu again and select Run.
- Type %windir%SoftwareDistribution in the Open box.
- In the SoftwareDistribution folder that opens, expand the DataStore folder and delete all contents.
- Open the Services management console window again.
- Right click Automatic Update or Windows Update and click Start.
Error Code: 0×80070057
Cause:
There is some problem with the ‘SoftwareDistribution ‘ folder.
Symptoms:
You cannot connect to the Windows Update website and get an error that contains the error code: 0×80070057’ .
Solution:
Warning: The following steps will delete all update history stored on your computer.
- Open up the Start menu and select Run.
- In the Open box type services.msc and press Enter.
- In the Services management console window that opens, right-click Automatic Update or Windows Update service and click Stop.
- Open up the Start menu and select Run again.
- Type %systemroot% in the Open box and press Enter.
- In the folder that opens, rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to say SoftwareDistribution.bak. Don’t delete it just in case.
- Open the Services management console window again.
- Right click Automatic Update or Windows Update and click Start.

- Download the BITS repair tool from Microsoft’s web site.

Error Code: 0x80072f78
Cause:
Incorrectly installed root certificates.
Symptoms:
When updating Windows defender the following error is displayed:
‘0x80240022 - the wrong diskette is in the drive. Insert x (Volume Serial Number: y) into drive z.'
Solution:
To resolve this problem, obtain install the root certificates update from Windows Update website. The root certificates you install on your PC must be in accordance with the list that is accepted by Microsoft’s Root Certificate Program.
Error Code: 0x80072f78
Cause:
Possible error in connection or a firewall or proxy.
Symptoms:
On running Windows Update, you get an error message that says:
