How to Fix Runtime Errors

in PC Optimization

One of the most common computer errors is runtime errors. If you often wonder how to fix runtime errors, this article is just what you need.

What Is Runtime Error?

Typically, runtime errors occur due to communication breakdown between the end user and the program that is being executed. For instance, running out of memory causes communication breakdown between you and the program you are trying to execute. When this happens, a runtime error message pops up on your screen.

A runtime error may occur due to variety of reasons. Shared below are the most common causes of runtime errors:

  • Malware programs
  • Conflict between TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident Program) and other running programs
  • Software problems
  • Memory issues

How to Fix Runtime Errors?

You may perform the following steps in the sequence they appear to troubleshoot a runtime error.

Run a Malware Scan

Malware programs, such as virus are capable of altering the system or memory settings and cause runtime errors. Run a malware scan using a reliable anti-malware program, such as XoftSpySE, to fix runtime error due to malware infection.

Also, to prevent malware programs from infiltrating your system in the future, keep your security tools updated with latest security updates and virus definitions.

Close All Running TSR  Programs

A TSR or Terminate & Stay Resident is a program that resides in your computer’s memory.  At times, a TSR can cause a conflict with other running programs, resulting in a runtime error.

To fix runtime error, shut down all running TSR programs detailed as below:

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del. This will open the Windows Task Manager window.
  2. Click the Applications tab. A List of running programs will appear.
  3. Select each program individually and click End Task.

Update Your Software

Running outdated software also causes runtime errors. Try running different software to find out which software is generating the runtime errors. After you identify the software, visit the software manufacturer’s website, and check if new updates or patches are available for your software. If yes, download and install the new updates or patches.

If you find the software is updated, uninstall and reinstall it to fix runtime error.

Run a Memory Diagnostic Tool

Runtime errors are also caused due to hardware issues, such as corrupt memory modules or RAM chips. Run a memory diagnostic tool to check if the memory modules of your computer are corrupted or damaged. If the scan results show there is problem with your RAM, you may have to replace your RAM to fix the errors. If you do not know how to this, seek help from a trained computer technician.

Workaround to Runtime Error – Internet Explorer

When you attempt to load a web page, you may receive an error message similar to the one displayed below:

“A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to debug?”

-Or-

“Internet Explorer Script Runtime Error. An error has occurred in the script on line 1. Do you wish to continue running scripts on this page?”

Solution

A workaround to these runtime errors is to configure Internet Explorer to ignore these script runtime errors. To achieve this, perform the following steps:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to the Tools menu, select Options, and then click Advanced.
  3. Select the checkbox before Disable script Debugging.
  4. Clear the checkbox before Display a notification about every script error.
  5. Click Apply and then click OK.
