Universal Serial Bus, popularly known as USB, has been around for a
long time. It is a standard means of interfacing different peripherals
to your computer. Standardized USB drivers and protocols across devices
have made most of these USB devices virtually plug-and-play.
Prior to the existence of USB, PCs needed to have different types of ports for different devices, such as: parallel port for printer, PS2 connector for keyboard and mouse, MIDI connector for joysticks. Today, almost all devices are compatible with USB. The USB ports behind your PC are and what you find behind compact and elegant which can support any device.
Windows USB Drivers Detection Method
When a USB device is plugged into your PC's USB port, the system immediately detects it and searches internally for the best available driver from the Windows USB drivers database and maps it to the device.
For example, if you plug in a Kingston USB flash drive, you will see a series of messages stating that Windows has detected the device and is installing a driver for it. Once Windows finds a relevant driver, you see a message saying that the device is ready to use.
While most of the devices run just fine through built-in Windows USB drivers, there are quite a few of them that require their own specific drivers. Absence of shipped drivers may generate USB driver error for these devices and hamper their functioning.
When first introduced, Windows Vista reported many driver issues that occurred because of its security features that required drivers to be certified. Quite a few vendors provided downloads of updated set of drivers for Windows Vista at a later date from shipment.
Install Customized USB Driver Before Plugging in The Device
There are some USB devices, especially printers and scanners that come with their own customized drivers. For such devices, it is advisable to first install the driver from the CD or DVD provided with the device, even before the device is first plugged in. Else, there might be a clash between Windows USB Drivers and the customized driver of the device.
Remove Windows USB Drivers
If you plugged your device to your computer before installing its USB drivers, and have problems with the Windows USB Drivers, you will first need to remove it following these steps:
- Plug off the USB device
- Search for its driver status in Hardware Profile from Windows
- Right click and remove the driver from the Hardware Profile
Reinstall New USB Drivers
You will need to be careful not to plug the device again, unless you have installed the shipped USB driver. You will need to install the device drivers from the disk provided and upon completion of the installation, connect the device through the USB port. The device will be mapped to the correct USB driver and start working normally.
Solving a nagging USB driver error may not always be as simple as tweaking the hardware profile from Control Panel. Sometimes, the effect of the wrong driver may rest in the Windows Registry for which you need an advanced tool that scans and fixes any driver anomaly.
